Collection Areas
How are different file types stored and viewed in a Collection?
SnapGene version 5.3 and later includes an Area for RNA files and provides a new RNA file type (.rna)
SnapGene version 5.3 and later includes an "All Files" view of all Areas.
SnapGene 6.0 and later allows you to save agarose gels. Click File → Save to Collection to save a gel file in the Miscellaneous Files area of a Collection.

A SnapGene Collection is divided into 4† Areas, each Area corresponds to a folder which can hold defined file types.
- RNA Files (.rna)- can contain RNA sequences
- Protein Files (.prot) - can contain Protein files
- DNA Files (.dna) - can contain DNA files
- Miscellaneous Files - can contain any file type that is not RNA, DNA or protein.
An Area folder may contain individual files of the appropriate file type, and subfolders containing the appropriate file type.
A Collection subfolder can have a "linked" subfolder in each Area. See this article for more information on creating linked folders - Create Links Between Collection Areas.
† As of SnapGene version 5.3. New file types/Areas may be added to Collections in future versions of SnapGene.

In this example we will view the DNA Area. Select the DNA File Area and click the "List View" button. List view will show all files in the selected Area, regardless of whether they are located in the top folder, or in subfolders.
List view allows you to search all files in the selected Area of the Collection. Available search criteria will depend on the Area selected - see Search a Collection.
